In the Exclusion Zone, most threats are loud. You can hear the Thrasher Vines breaking through the concrete, and you can smell the pollen of a Corpse Flower from a mile away.
But the most dangerous thing in the forest is the one that makes no sound at all.
Scientific Name: Dendrophylax phantasma (The Ghost Orchid) Classification: Extinct / Apex Parasite
The History Before the Exclusion Zone fell, the Ghost Orchid was already a myth. In the real world, Ghost Orchids are rare, leafless plants that appear to float in mid-air, anchoring themselves to trees.
In the Infernum lore, they are something far worse.
Legends from the early days of the Academy suggest that the Ghost Orchid was not just a plant, but a psycho-reactive parasite. Unlike other flora that feeds on sunlight or soil, the Ghost Orchid was rumored to feed on intent. It didn’t just grow on a host; it integrated with them.
Why It Is “Extinct” There is a reason you don’t see soldiers walking around with Ghost Orchid grafts.
Historical records indicate that the plant was purged from the Hothouse archives fifty years ago. The official reason listed is “failure to propagate.” The unofficial reason—found in the redacted margins of old field manuals—is that the symbiosis was too absolute. The plant didn’t just grant power; it consumed the personality of the user.
The Survivor In The Conservatory of Thorns, Elara Vance finds a seed that shouldn’t exist.
Because she is a Void (unable to metabolize magic), she is the only person capable of holding it. Her body tries to starve it, and the seed tries to consume her. It is a stalemate between a black hole and an immovable object.
But as the story progresses, we have to ask the question: If the Ghost Orchid has a consciousness… what has it been thinking about during all those years in the dark?
Field Note: If you see a white flower in the woods that has no leaves and casts no shadow… do not pick it. Run.
